BASF presented technical
information and aerial applicator experiences for TwinLine™ and
Caramba™ fungicides at the National Agricultural Aviation
Association’s (NAAA) annual conference today. Both fungicides
received EPA registrations for cereals this year.
“TwinLine and Caramba strengthen the BASF wheat fungicide
portfolio by providing broad-spectrum activity on rust, head
scab and other major cereal diseases,” said Amber Shirley,
Ph.D., Senior Technical Service Specialist with BASF.
TwinLine, labeled for barley, oats, rye, triticale and wheat,
combines pyraclostrobin, the active ingredient in Headline®
fungicide, and metconazole.
“TwinLine, specifically designed for aggressive wheat diseases
like stripe rust, delivers multiple benefits, including broad
spectrum disease control and Plant Health benefits, including
drought tolerance and stronger stands for easier harvest and
higher yield potential,” Dr. Shirley said. “The flag leaf is the
most important contributor to yield. With a wide application
window and an aerial label of two gallons per acre and greater,
TwinLine is perfectly suited for an on-demand market at the flag
leaf timing.”.
During the technical presentation, Dr. Shirley shared a summary
of 27 BASF and university small-plot, replicated trials that
were conducted in 2008.
The tests were conducted with TwinLine and two competitive
products – Quilt ® fungicide and Stratego® fungicide – and
included untreated plots.
TwinLine consistently delivered higher yield results compared to
both competitor products and increased yield by 10 bu/acre when
compared to the untreated plots.
Summary of Yield Results
TwinLine – 81 bu/acre
Quilt – 79 bu/acre
Stratego – 78 bu/acre
Untreated – 71 bu/acre
Caramba™ fungicide, formulated
with only metconazole, is another highly-effective fungicide
technology in the BASF wheat fungicide portfolio and delivers
premium performance on head scab. Caramba is labeled for use on
barley, oats, rye, sugarbeets, triticale and wheat.
“Caramba provides excellent activity on head scab, which is one
of the most destructive wheat diseases and can result in reduced
yield and quality if left untreated,” Dr.Shirley said.
“Suppression of head scab by Caramba results in significant
yield protection and reductions of deoxynivalenol (DON) levels
in grain.”
In 2008 field use, aerial applicators reported that they found
TwinLine and Caramba very easy to use when they were applied on
grower farms. TwinLine was a part of a large scale, on-farm
demonstration program, while Caramba was applied commercially
for head scab in wheat.
Both TwinLine and Caramba are EC formulations labeled for aerial
applications at two gallons per acre or more on cereals.

fungicide portfolio, growers and aerial applicators can contact
