67% of maize growers in the main
maize growing region of Italy, Lombardy, say they would be ready
to cultivate GMOs immediately were they given the chance. 74% of
them are also in favour of running field trials of GMOs in Italy
so as to better understand the benefits.
These are the main findings of a survey on maize growers’
perception of GMOs carried out on a representative sample of 532
farms in Lombardy by
Demoskopea on behalf of
Assobiotec, the Italian association of biotechnology
industries, within
Federchimica.
“The results show that the farmer base in Lombardy is open to
innovation and biotechnology” says Elisabetta Brambilla, the
survey coordinator. According to 80,6% of maize growers “it is
absurd to ban the cultivation of GMOs while allowing their
import for feed”. 75,9% “feel unfairly penalised compared with
farmers operating in other countries”. 75,6% consider GMOs “an
innovative agricultural instrument”. And the underlying feeling
for 74,8% of the farmers is that “farmers should be given the
freedom to choose what to produce”.
“Demoskopea’s survey offers an insight into the high level of
modernity, innovation and awareness of our agricultural sector;”
declares the president of Assobiotec, Roberto Gradnik “this is
very different from what is depicted by many politicians and
agricultural associations in Italy who are clearly pursuing a
prejudiced and ideological opposition to GMOs”.
According to Gradnik “the farming sector has confirmed its
willingness to be dynamic and innovative, being acutely aware
that these are the tools required to remain competitive on the
increasingly international market that the farming sector faces
today”.
“Those who are trying to manage the damage caused by fungi and
parasites day in day out – continues Gradnik – can but
appreciate the solutions offered by modern biotechnology.
Genetically improved maize is not only safe for humans and
animals but it offers economic benefits in terms of increased
productivity given the pest and disease pressure”.
“We hope that those responsible for the legislative framework in
Italy will finally end the ideological hostility against GMOs
and allow the benefits to be felt in Italy as well, starting
with allowing field trials in the country. This is no longer a
request of industry alone, farmers are demanding the freedom to
choose as well” concludes the President of Assobiotec.

El 67% de los agricultores de maíz de Lombardía, la región
italiana con mayor número de cultivos de maíz, afirman estar
dispuestos a cultivar esta variedad inmediatamente si se les
diera la oportunidad. Además, el 74% de ellos está a favor del
desarrollo de ensayos en los campos italianos a fin de
comprender mejor los beneficios de dichas semillas.
Estas son las principales conclusiones que se desprenden de la
encuesta realizada por Demoskopea en nombre de Assobiotec, la
asociación italiana de las industrias de la biotecnología, para
analizar la percepción de los OGM por parte de los productores
de maíz. El estudio se llevó a cabo en una muestra
representativa de 532 granjas en Lombardía.
“Los resultados muestran que los agricultores asentados en
Lombardía están abiertos a la innovación y a la biotecnología”,
afirma Elisabetta Brambilla, coordinadora de la encuesta. Según
el documento, el 80,6% de los productores de maíz considera que
“es absurdo prohibir el cultivo de OMG mientras que en Italia se
permite la importación para piensos". Además, el 75,9% se
sienten “injustamente penalizados en comparación con los
agricultores de otros países”, y el 75,8% cree que los OMG son
“un instrumento agrícola innovador”. El sentimiento subyacente
del 74,8% de los agricultores es que “deberían tener libertad de
elegir lo que se produce”.
“La encuesta de Demoskopea ofrece una idea del alto nivel de
modernidad, innovación y conocimiento de nuestro sector
agrícola”, según afirma el presidente de Assobiotec, Roberto
Gradnik. “Esta realidad es muy diferente de la que pretenden
reflejar muchos políticos y asociaciones agrarias italianas, que
están llevando a cabo una clara campaña de oposición hacia los
OGMs”, matizó.
Según Gradnik, “el sector agrícola ha confirmado su voluntad de
ser dinámico e innovador, siendo conscientes de que estos son
los instrumentos necesarios para seguir siendo competitivos en
el mercado agrícola internacional actual”.
"Aquellos que están tratando de controlar los daños causados por
hongos y parásitos día a día, pueden apreciar las soluciones que
ofrece la biotecnología moderna. El maíz mejorado genéticamente
no sólo es seguro para el ser humano y los animales, además,
teniendo en cuenta la presión de plagas y enfermedades, ofrece
ventajas económicas en términos de aumento de la productividad",
remarcó Gradnik.
"Esperamos que los responsables del marco legislativo italiano
permitan poner fin a la hostilidad ideológica en contra de los
OMGs y que reconozcan los beneficios de estas variedades
impulsando las pruebas de campo. Esto ya no es una petición de
la industria, los agricultores también están exigiendo la
libertad de elección ", concluye el Presidente de Assobiotec.
