BASF Canada has received
registration for the use of SOLO® herbicide on CLEARFIELD®
lentils. SOLO provides broad-spectrum control of grasses and
targeted broadleaf weeds balanced with follow-crop flexibility.
This new registration combined with strong CLEARFIELD lentil
varieties provides growers with another great opportunity to
benefit from proven one-pass weed control in lentils for higher
yield potential and an easier harvest.
"CLEARFIELD lentils are a welcome addition to the SOLO label,"
says Chris Vander Kant, Western Herbicide Brand Manager for BASF
Canada. "SOLO is one of three herbicide options CLEARFIELD
lentil growers can rely on for effective, one-pass weed control.
And, with its exceptional follow-crop flexibility, SOLO provides
more rotational options for growers."
SOLO controls 10 grasses and eight broadleaf weeds, including
stinkweed, lamb’s-quarters, redroot pigweed, wild mustards,
volunteer cereals, wild oats and Group 1 resistant grasses, and
provides suppression of a number of other weeds including
Japanese Brome grass.
SOLO has a wide application window and should be applied from
the two- to six-leaf stage of CLEARFIELD lentils and after weeds
have emerged. To control broadleaf weeds, apply SOLO from the
cotyledon up to the four-leaf stage, and for grass control apply
from the one- to four-true leaf stages up until early tillering.
The year following an application of SOLO, growers can seed a
wide variety of crops including all canola types, flax, spring
wheat, durum wheat, spring barley, tame oats and peas.
"Lentils are poor weed competitors and weed competition can
significantly impact yield," says Scott Chapman, CLEARFIELD
Brand Manager with BASF. "With the addition of SOLO to the
CLEARFIELD lentil herbicide portfolio, growers now have another
tool to control yield robbing weeds, giving their lentil crop a
better chance to reach its yield potential. And with strong
agronomics behind CLEARFIELD lentil varieties, the system
provides growers a better opportunity to profit from lentil
production."
For the 2008 growing season three CLEARFIELD lentil varieties
will be commercially available – CDC Imperial CL (extra-small
red), CDC Impact CL (small red) and CDC Improve CL* (large
green). Each variety offers a solid agronomic package, including
good Ascochyta resistance and early to medium maturity. They
also offer high yield potential as they are bred from elite Crop
Development Centre lentil germplasm, and provide growers the
opportunity to take advantage of the convenience and financial
benefits of effective, one-pass weed control. Growers can
purchase CLEARFIELD lentil seed directly from local seed
growers.
In 2008, CLEARFIELD lentil growers also have the opportunity to
save through the GrowForwardTM Rewards Program and the
CLEARFIELD AdvantageTM**. GrowForward Rewards provides growers
with savings of up to 14% off CLEARFIELD herbicides, 22% off
HEADLINE® and LANCE® fungicides and 3% off Next Generation Tag
Team® inoculant. The CLEARFIELD Advantage provides users of
CLEARFIELD technology with access to the Seed Protection
Advantage – $1 per acre off GEMINI® and CHARTER® seed treatments
on all cereal acres – and the ONE-PASS Advantage – premium
re-spray in the event of grassy weed control escapes with
ODYSSEY® DLX.
With the registration of SOLO there are now three herbicides
available for use as part of the CLEARFIELD Production System
for Lentils – ODYSSEY, ODYSSEY DLX and SOLO.
