With harvest complete, South Texas cotton growers prepare for 2008 - Newest FiberMax cotton seed varieties keep profit potential high

.

Lubbock, Texas
January 15, 2008

With the 2007 cotton harvest complete in South Texas, growers have their sights set on the 2008 crop season. In fact, many of them have decided which cotton varieties and technologies they will incorporate next spring.

“We’ve booked our seed for 2008,” said Nueces County grower Jimmy Dodson. “We plan on planting 100 percent Bollgard II, and we’ll use both LibertyLink and Flex technologies. In particular, we’re looking at
FM 835LLB2 and FM 840B2F.”

This past season, Dodson planted several top-performing varieties, including FM 9063B2F and FM 800B2R. Despite some ill-timed harvest rains that lowered color grades, Dodson’s cotton crop averaged a 37 staple length with premium micronaire and good uniformity. His FiberMax acres yielded well — a 940 lbs/A average across more than 1,100 dryland acres.

Dodson said he has planted FiberMax® cotton seed varieties since they first became commercially available in 1998. He said several factors keep him coming back to FiberMax.

“They have consistent fiber quality under variable conditions, they yield well under stress, and they withstand weathering as well as anything out there,” he said.

The option to plant varieties equipped with LibertyLink® technology is also a draw, he added, particularly for fields infested with morningglory and other vine weeds.

Jeff Brehmer, U.S. FiberMax marketing manager, said Bayer CropScience has established a reputation in South Texas with varieties such as FM 800B2R and FM 832LL that perform ideally under local growing conditions. He said new varieties — especially FM 835LLB2 and FM 840B2F — will continue raising the bar in this part of the Cotton Belt.

“These varieties are specifically tailored to South Texas growing conditions,” Brehmer said. “FM 835LLB2 and FM 840B2F deliver outstanding yield and fiber quality potential with the newest genetics in the FiberMax germplasm lineup.”
