Scientists from all over the world
will travel to Ireland in August for the
Agricultural Biotechnology
International Conference (ABIC). Exciting new developments
in biotechnology will be presented and discussed over the
three-day conference which takes place in University College
Cork beginning on Sunday, 24 August 2008.
Announcing details of the conference, Prof Jimmy Burke of
Teagasc said:”The theme for
the plenary session on Monday 25 August "Ag-Biotech: The
sustainability challenge facing society and the economy" will
set the tone for what promises to be a very important conference
in progressing the debate on the use of biotechnology in
European agriculture. This is the first time for the conference
to be held in Ireland and it will bring together the leading
scientists, industry participants and academics from around the
world involved in this sector.“
Prof Burke said:” The programme for the ABIC 2008 Cork
conference contains the world's leading-edge companies and
scientists in the ag-biotechnology arena, spanning science and
applications in biotechnology, genomics, crop, animal, marine,
bioenergy, pharma, food, dairy and regulatory sectors. For
instance, there are a number of Fortune 500 companies presenting
their biotech Research and Development, and also a number of
prestigious speakers highlighted amongst the world's most
influential people in the scientific and business sectors by
Time magazine.
ABIC 2008 in Cork, will bring many of the world's largest
agriculture, fisheries and food biotechnology companies together
and will provide an opportunity for continuous learning and
networking within the agricultural biotechnology community. ABIC
2008 also incorporates a trade exhibition and poster session.
The event presents a unique opportunity for Ireland to showcase
its biotech Research and Development sector and activities to an
international audience and will provide exhibitors with the
opportunity to promote their businesses and products. Scientists
from PhD to Principle Investigator level will present and
discuss their findings through a poster session.
Next year ABIC will be hosted by Thailand, and was hosted by
