- Capacity expansion comes
amid strong demand for agricultural products
- F 500®, boscalid, fipronil
and metazachlor among innovative compounds to receive boost
in production
BASF Crop Protection
plans to invest more than €150 million in additional capacity to
meet the growing demand for key crop protection products in the
coming years. The two-year expansion project will increase
capacity at production facilities in Germany, France, Brazil and
the United States for top-selling active ingredients such as F
500®, boscalid, fipronil and metazachlor. This sum is on top of
the base investment of around €90 million for 2008, which
includes production capacity expenditures for BASF’s new
blockbuster herbicide Kixor™.
“Farmers are seeking to capitalize on the high prices for
agricultural commodities,” said Michael Heinz, President of
BASF’s Crop Protection division. “That means getting the most
out of every hectare of farmland with innovative crop protection
products.”
The majority of this new capacity will become available in 2010
at the latest. The products with these active ingredients have
demonstrated outstanding performance in the field. Included are
two pipeline compounds: F 500® and boscalid. The fungicide F
500® is BASF’s star plant health fungicide, bringing growers
additional yield benefits of around 10% in crops such as corn
and soybeans in addition to the excellent disease control in
over 100 different crops. The fungicide boscalid, originally
developed for the fast-growing fruit and vegetables segment, is
now being successfully launched in cereals and oil seed rape.
The combined peak sales potential of these two pipeline active
ingredients is more than €700 million. The insecticide fipronil
and the herbicide metazachlor are two mainstays in BASF’s crop
protection portfolio and will continue to be featured in the
company’s next-generation products.

Der BASF Unternehmensbereich Crop
Protection plant eine Investition von mehr als 150 Millionen €
in erweiterte Produktionskapazitäten, um damit in den kommenden
Jahren die steigende Nachfrage für seine wichtigsten
Pflanzenschutzmittel decken zu können. In einem auf zwei Jahre
ausgelegten Expansionsprojekt werden die Kapazitäten in den
Produktions-anlagen in Deutschland, Frankreich, Brasilien und
den USA aufgestockt, wo die umsatzstarken Wirkstoffe wie F 500®,
Boscalid, Fipronil und Metazachlor hergestellt werden. Diese
Summe wird zusätzlich zu einer Basisinvestition von etwa 90
Millionen € im Jahr 2008 bereitgestellt, welche die Errichtung
einer Produktionsanlage für das neue Blockbuster-Herbizid
KixorTM beinhaltet.
„Die Landwirte versuchen, von den momentan hohen Preisen für
landwirtschaftliche Produkte zu profitieren“, erläutert Michael
Heinz, Leiter des Unternehmensbereichs Crop Protection bei BASF.
„Das bedeutet, sie setzen vermehrt innovative
Pflanzenschutzmitteln ein, um aus jedem Hektar Land ein Maximum
an Ertrag zu erwirtschaften.“
Der Großteil der erweiterten Produktionskapazitäten wird bis
spätestens 2010 zur Verfügung stehen. Die Produkte mit diesen
Pflanzenschutzwirkstoffen zeigen in der Praxis eine
hervorragende Wirksamkeit. Darunter sind zwei neue Wirkstoffe
aus der BASF-Forschung, F 500® und Boscalid. F 500® hilft den
Landwirten, wichtige Pflanzenkrankheiten in mehr als 100
Anbaukulturen wirksam zu bekämpfen und ermöglicht es ihnen
darüber hinaus, bei Anbaufrüchten wie Mais oder Sojabohnen eine
zusätzliche Ertragssteigerung von etwa 10 Prozent zu erzielen.
Das Fungizid Boscalid, ursprünglich für schnell wachsende
Sonderkulturen wie Obst und Gemüse entwickelt, wird inzwischen
auch erfolgreich bei Getreide und Ölsaaten eingesetzt. Das
Spitzenumsatzpotenzial dieser beiden neuen Wirkstoffe beträgt
mehr als 700 Millionen €. Das Insektizid Fipronil und das
Herbizid Metazachlor sind zwei tragende Säulen im Pflanzenschutz
bei BASF und werden auch in Zukunft in der Produktpalette des
Unternehmens eine wichtige Rolle spielen.
Mit seinem Portfolio innovativer Pflanzenschutzprodukte blickt
BASF optimistisch in die Zukunft mit wachsendem Bedarf an
landwirtschaftlichen Erzeugnissen. Von Seiten der Kunden und in
der gesellschaftlichen Diskussion werden dafür Produkte
gefordert, mit denen auf der kulturfähigen Fläche ein maximaler
Ertrag erwirtschaftet werden kann und die gleichzeitig
verträglich für Mensch und Umwelt sind. Die BASF-Forschung zeigt
