ABCSEM (Associação Brasileira do Comércio de Sementes e Mudas / Brazilan Seed and Young Plants Trading Association), a 38 years old society that represents, supports and guides the Brazilian horticulture seeds and young plants traders, had just elected a new slate of officers to conduct the entity.

  • Executive Director for Vegetable Young Plants: Mr. Ricardo Augusto Zepter (Hazera do Brasil)
  • Main Secretary: Mr. Antonio Hideo (Sakata Seed Sudamérica)

MARKET INFORMATION

The previous association managing group put a lot of effort on the discussion with government about the legislation for the sector. It was a hard work and provided good results.

The new group managing the association will continue to provide a lot of attention to the legislation aspects, therefore holding a close relationship with government authorities and in addition wants to invest efforts in other areas.

One of the areas will be to develop more information about the seed market value in Brazil. This information is very limited. But between 2000 and 2003 ABCSEM carried a survey among the associate members and as a result of this initiative some information about Brazilian vegetable seed market was generated.

This work was interrupted and started last year again with the intention to improve the quality of such information.

Changes have taken place on Brazilian seed market and in some species a big conversion from open pollinated to hybrids is expressive. The most recent examples are on carrots and watermelon market.

In Addiction of the Directory, ABCSEM has a professional team to defend the sector interests. Mariana Ceratti, an agronomist, is the Executive Coordinator, supported by another 3 persons.

NEW HONORARY MEMBER

The new ABCSEM Board decided recently to invite Mr. Márcio Nascimento to take place in the association as an honorary member, as recognition of his cooperation for the sector and also for his deep knowledge and experience in vegetables market.

Mr. Nascimento dedicated more than 33 years of his career in the seeds business, and more than 30 years for the vegetable seeds. He had leading position on sales and marketing area of Asgrow and Seminis Vegetable Seeds in Brazil until February 2007. He was ABCSEM President years ago, and was also President of Brazilian Vegetable Chamber until November of last year. Besides it he has several other leading positions in other Brazilian seed associations. Mr. Nascimento is working now as a seed consultant.
