Mycogen Seeds to expand its Mt. Vernon, Indiana corn breeding field station

.

Indianapolis, Indiana
June 4, 2008

Dow AgroSciences LLC and Mycogen Seeds announced today plans to expand and move their current corn breeding field station to a new location in Mt. Vernon, Indiana. Dow AgroSciences has purchased three acres of land located just west of the intersection of Lamont Road and Lower Mt. Vernon Road.

The new Mt. Vernon site will provide expanded working and storage space to allow for continued growth. The new facilities will include an office and seed lab building as well as an equipment storage building with a heated shop area. The new facility is expected to have approximately 7,200 square feet for the office/seed lab building and approximately 8,400 square feet for the equipment storage building.

“At Dow AgroSciences, we are currently investing heavily in our breeding station infrastructure to fuel the growth of our seeds and traits business,” said Don Blackburn, North America Seeds and Traits Field Breeding and Development leader. “We expect our Mycogen Seeds business to grow and are excited about the future launch of SmartStaxTM and our Dow Herbicide Tolerance family of traits. Our Mt. Vernon project is the first of several projects planned around the world.”

“Dow AgroSciences’ expansion in Mt. Vernon is a win for the community,” said Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman. “The new site will provide good jobs to the residents and stimulate the local economy. Governor Daniels and I are pleased to see a company with a long history in Indiana continue to invest in our state.”

The Mt. Vernon Field Station has three basic breeding programs: convention grain corn breeding, silage corn breeding, and a germplasm enhancement breeding program. The breeding programs are effectively coupled with a hybrid testing program comprised of 55,000 yield trial plots in 2008. The testing program will continue to expand to 80,000 plots by 2010.

Construction on the new facility is scheduled to begin in June and is expected to be completed by December 2008. Project costs were not disclosed. The Mt. Vernon Field Station will have approximately six full-time employees, six temporary employees, and 30 seasonal workers.
