Sakata to acquire gerbera breeding program from Varinova B.V.

Sakata Seed Corporation announces its acquisition of all pot Gerbera breeding activity from Varinova B.V., located in Berkel en Rodenrijs, The Netherlands effective July 1st, 2008. Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.

"The acquisition of Varinova's Gerbera program will extend Sakata's leading global position in the pot Gerbera market, with the innovative Kameleo and Durora Series.” says Dave Armstrong, Managing Director of Sakata's Global Ornamental Unit. “The varieties and breeding program of Varinova are complementary to Sakata’s strong
Gerbera range, including the Festival series, and create a synergy that is beneficial to our customers and end-users”.

"This deal will enable Varinova to collaborate with a strong breeding company.” says Bart Kuijer from Varinova. “For Sakata we will continue the breeding of our Kameleo and Durora line and I am convinced that Varinova’s pot Gerbera program will strengthen Sakata’s position in the pot Gerbera market.”

Sakata Seed Corporation, founded in 1913, is established today among the world leaders in research, production and commercialization of flower and vegetable seeds. The group has a global presence thanks to its 32 subsidiary companies. Sakata’s turnover is in excess of 350 Millions euros of which 60 % is seeds.

Varinova, founded in July 2000, is specialized in the breeding of pot Gerbera and Cyclamen. With a staff of 10 people Varinova has a focus on the development of innovative ornamental products.
