Headline fungicide receives U.S. government approval for use on oats - Registration of BASF fungicide important for Canadian oat exports

Mississauga, Ontario, Canada
May 6, 2008

The United States Department of Agriculture recently approved the use of HEADLINE® fungicide on oats. This is an important registration for Canadian oat growers who export oats to the U.S. market as it allows them to use HEADLINE to protect their crop from key diseases without limiting their export opportunities.

“With the U.S. registration, Canadian oat growers can confidently export their HEADLINE-treated oats to the U.S.,” says Wayne Barton, Brand Manager, Fungicides for BASF Canada. “And because of the effective disease control HEADLINE delivers, these growers can be sure that the quality and yield of their oat crop is top-notch.”
Canada received registration for the use of HEADLINE on oats at the end of 2007. All oats exported to the U.S. must meet the required Maximum Residue Levels (MRL) required by law.

Oats are an important crop for Canadian growers because they have a wide variety of uses. As a raw ingredient in food products, oats are used in the production of cookies, breakfast cereals, breads, muffins, crackers, snacks, beverages and meat extenders. In the cosmetic industry, oats are used as talc replacers and in skin care products.

With these and other potential uses, maintaining a high-quality oat is of paramount importance. Diseases such as Crown rust (Puccinia coronata) can damage the plants, not only compromising the crop’s quality but also severely reducing yield.

To maximize yield and ensure a quality crop, it is important to protect the oat plant’s flag leaf from disease. For optimal disease control, HEADLINE should be applied immediately after flag leaf emergence. The recommended use rate is 120 – 160 ml per acre (0.3L - 0.4L of product per hectare). A second application can be made 10 to 14 days later if the disease persists or conditions are favourable for disease development.
