Course to assist Western Australian farmers in identification of crop and pasture plant diseases

.

South Perth, Western Australia
May 7, 2008

Educating farmers on identifying crop and pasture plant diseases will assist in early detection and correct control procedures.

Partners in Grain (PinG) will hold a number of Plant Disease Identification courses in July and August to provide farmers with practical hands-on knowledge of disease identification.

The half day workshop will be presented by two experienced Department of Agriculture and Food plant pathology laboratory officers.

PinG Western Australian co-ordinator Julianne Hill said participants in the workshop would learn to recognise major plant disease symptoms, understand control measures and differentiate between disease, herbicide and other factors causing leaf damage.

The workshops will be held:

July 28  Esperance
July 29  Ravensthorpe
July 30  Dumbleyung
July 31  Katanning

August 1    Williams
August 22  Tammin
August 23  Wongan Hills
August 24  Dandaragan
August 25  Three Springs

The cost of the workshop is $80 which includes all course materials, morning or afternoon tea and lunch.

Places are strictly limited so farmers interested in attending a workshop in their area should contact Julianne Hill on phone 9838 1997, email jrhill@agric.wa.gov.au or visit the website www.partnersingrain.org.au

This course is being presented as a joint partnership between Partners in Grain, the Department of Agriculture and Food, and Elders.

Partners in Grain is a Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) funded project supported by the Department of Agriculture and Food that aims to build the capacity of the Western Australian grains industry by actively encouraging the participation of all those within the farm business unit through professional development opportunities.
