Bayer CropScience honors top-class U.S. cotton growers at third annual FiberMax One Ton Club awards banquet

Lubbock, Texas
May 7, 2008

Bayer CropScience recently hosted the third annual FiberMax One Ton Club™ awards banquet in Lubbock to honor the 2007 class of One Ton Club growers.

Following a near perfect season with an extended fall, 98 growers achieved one-ton yields in Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, bringing the total number of members to 234 since the club was established in 2005.

The club recognizes growers who plant FiberMax® cotton seed and produce 2,000 lbs of lint cotton or more per acre on at least 20 acres.

According to Jeff Brehmer, U.S. marketing manager for FiberMax cotton seed, seven new varieties were added to the list that current members have planted to achieve one-ton yields. To-date, growers have attained these yields with 12 varieties in the FiberMax lineup.

“We inducted 55 first-year members, 32 second-year members and 11 third-year members into the 2007 One Ton Club,” Brehmer said. “The number of members we recognize during our annual awards banquet continues to increase annually. We commend these growers for following through with the management techniques they implement from day one to produce high-yielding, high-quality cotton.”

Keynote speakers at the event, cotton economists Dr. Carl Anderson and Dr. O.A. Cleveland, congratulated the 2007 One Ton Club inductees. With FiberMax, Cleveland said, growers are producing cotton that combines both yield and quality, which is critical in today’s bearish cotton market. He applauded the growers for producing a product demanded by mills around the world.

One Ton Truck Winner

The banquet featured the drawing for a two-year lease on a Ford® F-350 Super Duty King Ranch truck. Butch and Michael Harrell of BAM Farms from Plainview, Texas, won the lease and said they were surprised and excited to accept the prize. The father and son team have been farming as a partnership for 23 years.

BAM Farms produced an average of 2,072 lbs/A with FM 9063B2F on their qualifying acres.

“When I think about our field of FM 9063B2F, I see an image of a perfectly uniform cotton plant loaded with bolls from the top to the bottom of the plant,” Michael Harrell said. “We shot for 4-bale-per-acre yields on our drip-irrigated land and pushed the crop hard to achieve high yields in 2007. No cotton can beat FiberMax.”
Other awards were presented during the banquet, including highest yield, highest loan value and highest gross value per acre:

• Highest Yield and Highest Gross Value Per Acre:
Lynn Long, Seminole, Texas, 2,770lbs/A, FM 989B2R
• Highest Loan Value:
Al Duesterhaus, Whitharral, Texas, 59.5 cents loan value, FM 9063B2F
Aggressive Production Practices

According to Steve Nichols, U.S. agronomic manger for FiberMax, Stoneville® and AFD™ cotton seed, One Ton Club growers implement a number of the Best Management Practices outlined by the First Forty Days™ initiative. These practices, coupled with an aggressive production plan, contribute to achieving one-ton yields.

“FiberMax varieties are part of the Bayer Season, which offers cotton growers planting and early season crop solutions,” Nichols said. “Success for the majority of One Ton Club growers results from timely management from day one to achieve maximum profit potential.”

This fall, Bayer CropScience will distribute qualification forms for growers who will be eligible for membership in the FiberMax One Ton Club based on their 2008 yields. Growers can contact their local seed and technology representative and visit www.FiberMax.com for more information on the FiberMax One Ton Club.
