BASF Canada introduces new formulation of Headline Duo fungicide for chickpea growers in Western Canada

Mississauga, Ontario, Canada
May 13, 2008

BASF Canada is introducing a new formulation of HEADLINE® DUO fungicide for chickpea growers in Western Canada, making it easier to protect chickpeas against disease. Developed by BASF, HEADLINE DUO was introduced in 2007 to address Ascochyta resistance in chickpeas and combines two of the most effective active ingredients available for disease control in chickpeas – pyraclostrobin and boscalid.

“Ascochyta is the most devastating chickpea disease, and the resistant strains of this disease are a real concern to chickpea growers,” said Wayne Barton, Fungicide Brand Manager for BASF Canada. “This is where HEADLINE DUO comes in.”

For the 2008 growing season, growers will find HEADLINE DUO packaged in a new dry formulation, which contains an optimized ratio of each active ingredient in one indivisible jug.

Since 2007, when resistant Ascochyta strains were first detected, BASF Canada has been working with provincial and federal officials, including the Pest Management Regulatory Agency and industry stakeholders, to ensure chickpea growers have access to a fungicide solution that will control all strains of Ascochyta.

BASF recommends applying HEADLINE DUO as the first fungicide application at the 7- to 10-node stage of chickpea development to ensure the crop benefits from a disease-free start. If further applications are required due to new or persistent disease outbreaks, rotate HEADLINE DUO with a fungicide with another mode of action such as Bravo®. Good stewardship practices dictate that fungicides should be rotated and that growers avoid sequential application of one specific product or chemistry.
