Calgary, Alberta, Canada
November 17, 2008
At each of 36 different locations
across Western Canada, farmer-managed yield trials showed
InVigor® canola hybrids outperformed Roundup Ready competitors.
The recently tabulated 2008 Demonstration Strip Trial (DST)
results for Western Canada showed top InVigor hybrids produced
yields that were on average 5.6 to 6.2 bu/ac more than Roundup
Ready hybrids. The Top InVigor hybrid yield averaged 51.6 bu/ac
while Dekalb’s 71-45 and Pioneer’s 45H26 came in at 45.4 bu/ac
and 46 bu/ac respectively.
“This year’s strip trials show once again why we say ‘Nothing
Outperforms InVigor,’” said Rod Merryweather, North American
Oilseeds Business Operations Manager with
Bayer CropScience
in Calgary. “In locations all across Western Canada and under a
range of agronomic and environmental conditions, InVigor hybrids
did noticeably better than other hybrids.”
Pioneer’s 45H26 and DeKalb’s 71-45, both Roundup Ready hybrids,
fell short coming in at 96% and 94% of the InVigor 5020 check
respectively in the Western Canada results.
Regional results were even more dramatic. Alberta’s eleven
locations showed a superior yield performance by the top InVigor
hybrid of 8 percent ahead of the Roundup Ready hybrids. Southern
Saskatchewan’s seven locations showed the top InVigor
outyielding Roundup Ready hybrids 8 to 15 percent while in
Northern Saskatchewan the top InVigor hybrid performed 10 to 11
percent better than Roundup Ready hybrids in seven locations.
Manitoba’s eleven locations rounded out the DST program with a
top InVigor performance that was 8 to 12 percent ahead of the
same Roundup Ready hybrids there. (For details, please refer to
the attached backgrounder with charts depicting Western
Canada-wide and regional results.)
Demonstration Strip Trials (DSTs) have taken place at various
locations across the canola growing regions of the Prairies
since 1997, when Bayer CropScience first developed the concept.
Each plot has eight to ten strips of at least 35 feet wide x 500
feet long, replicated twice. Strips are seeded and grown
side-by-side under identical soil, moisture, climatic conditions
and agronomic practices to provide meaningful results. More
information is available at invigorresults.ca
“There are three key parts in the design of the DSTs that make
them a fair and credible performance comparison,” said
Merryweather. “First, they’re all farmer-managed; secondly, they
measure net yields after dockage and once standardized for
moisture; and finally they are replicated to ensure scientific
accuracy. That’s a more accurate measure of what the canola crop
is worth to the grower and so we believe it’s a better
comparison.”
InVigor hybrids have dominated the top yield positions in the
independent Prairie Canola Variety Trials (PCVT), run by the
Canola Council of Canada, since the program’s inception in 2003.
In fact, last year InVigor claimed all five of the top five
yield positions. Starting last year, InVigor 5020 become one of
the new checks of the PCVT trials, recognition that InVigor
canola hybrids set the standard for yield performance in Western
Canada.
Aside from their yield advantages, InVigor hybrids have the
unique advantage of the LibertyLink® system – which is based on
the only Group 10 herbicide registered in canola. This provides
fast weed control while helping manage herbicide resistance on
the Prairies. Convenient two-pass programs and tank-mixes allow
for excellent control of grass and broadleaf weed competition in
canola crops.
InVigor hybrids are the most popular canola seeded on the
Prairies, accounting for the majority of hybrids seeded this
past season.
