Company climbs to No. 2 in ranking; up six spots from last year

Monsanto Company (NYSE: MON) is earning recognition as a leader in biotechnology not just for its ground-breaking products but also for being a great place to work.

Monsanto, headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, took second place in the 2008 Top Biotech and Pharma Employers list by Science, a leading industry publication. The company moved up six spots from number eight the prior year.
The annual web-based survey rates companies around the world in 23 categories.
The top driver in the survey was being an innovative leader in the industry, followed by quality of top management, and loyal employees, said Ian King, associate director of science careers for Science magazine.

"More than 90 percent of the respondents who voted for Monsanto agreed that each of those attributes applied to the organization, up from 70 percent in last year's survey," King said. "That's a massive increase."

Monsanto is dedicated to delivering innovative solutions to farmers that help them be more productive and profitable, as well as health benefits to consumers through better, and more nutritious foods, said Robert T. Fraley, Ph.D., chief technology officer and executive vice president for the company.

"I am thrilled that Monsanto is being recognized as a great place for cutting-edge research. Making new discoveries starts with having a terrific team. Our scientists and researchers play a key role in the company's success," Fraley said. "The work they are doing today will help us meet our goal of doubling yields by 2030 while conserving more of the world's resources."

The survey also included such categories as corporate image, work environment, work/life balance, and compensation and benefits. Monsanto ranked second only to San Francisco-based Genentech Inc.

Monsanto was recently honored as one of the 2008 Working Mother 100 Best Companies by Working Mother magazine. Companies were selected based on 500 questions in seven areas: workforce profile, compensation, child care, flexibility, time off and leaves, family-friendly programs and company culture.

Monsanto is the only company in the St. Louis area to receive either award.
