DIR 091 - Commerical release of cotton genetically modified for insect resistance (Widestrike Insect Protection cotton)

DIR 091 - Notification of application - Commercial release of cotton genetically modified for insect resistance (Widestrike Insect Protection cotton) - posted 31 October 2008 (PDF 49 KB)

NOTIFICATION OF APPLICATION

Receipt of licence application from Dow AgroSciences to undertake dealings involving a commercial release of genetically modified cotton: DIR 091

Application

The Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) has received a licence application (DIR 091) from Dow AgroSciences Australia Ltd (Dow) for a commercial release of genetically modified (GM) cotton into the Australian environment.

Dow is seeking approval to release GM cotton containing two genes that have been shown to increase insect resistance. The purpose of the proposed release is the commercial release of the GM insect resistant cotton known as Widestrike™ Insect Protection cotton. The applicant proposes that the GM cotton will be grown in all cotton growing areas of Australia south of latitude 22o South, and that plant material from the GM cotton would be used in the same manner as plant material from non-GM cotton and commercially approved GM cotton.

Purpose of this notification

At this stage, no comment is sought from members of the public. A comprehensive Risk Assessment and Risk Management Plan (RARMP) for the application will be prepared, taking into account advice received from prescribed experts, agencies and authorities as specified in section 50A of the Gene Technology Act 2000 (the Act). I expect this to be released for public comment and further advice from experts, agencies and authorities in April 2009.

You can obtain a copy of the application by contacting my Office (see contact details below, please quote the reference number DIR 091). As the application is quite lengthy, you may prefer to view a summary of the application, which is posted on our website along with this document (under ‘What’s New’). If you would like to receive a hard copy of the application summary, please contact us and we will post it to you.

If you have questions about the application, or how you can provide comment, please contact the OGTR at:
