EuropaBio welcomes the
report (1) issued by the Joint Research Centre today that
reconfirms the results of a 2001 Commission study concluding
that no demonstration of any health effect of GM food products
has ever been reported and the use of more precise technology
and the greater regulatory scrutiny very likely makes them even
safer than conventional plants and foods.
“That food made from biotech crops is safe for human and animal
consumption is not exactly news,” says Willy De Greef, Secretary
General of EuropaBio. The 2001 study by the European Commission
covering 15 years experience with agricultural biotech products
affirmed exactly that, and so did the more recent reports by the
WHO, the French and British Academies of Medicine and other
renowned institutes, “We hope that the European policymakers who
have insisted on verifying this fact again will now act in
accordance with the findings in the form of more timely and
actual approvals of biotech products”.
The head of EuropaBio calls for widespread communication from
the EU to the general public about the JRC’s findings, something
that that was sorely lacking when the 2001 Commission study was
published.
“Now that we have once again (re-)ascertained the safety of
biotech foods, let’s give consumers the opportunity to choose
among a variety of safe foods produced with the help of modern
biotechnology… let’s get these products approved!” he concluded.

EuropaBio cree de
especial relevancia los resultados que se desprenden
del informe presentado hoy por el Joint Research
Centre (Centro Común de Investigaciones) en el que
se concluye que no se ha dado ningún efecto derivado
de los alimentos modificados genéticamente referidos
a la salud humana y que el mayor grado de control al
que se somete a estos alimentos los hace aún más
seguros que los convencionales.
Estas conclusiones, que reiteran las obtenidas por
la Comisión Europea en 2001, explican que “los
alimentos elaborados a partir de cultivos
biotecnológicos son seguros para el consumo humano y
animal no es exactamente algo novedoso”, explica
Willy De Greef, Secretario General de EuropaBio.
El estudio elaborado por el JRC, que abarca 15 años
de experiencia extensiva con productos agrícolas
biotecnológicos, afirma que, al igual que los
estudios más recientes de la Organización Mundial de
la Salud y las Academias de Medicinas francesa y
británicas, esperan “que los responsables políticos
europeos que han insistido una vez más en la
verificación de este hecho actúen en línea a estas
conclusiones de la forma más oportuna y efectiva en
las aprobaciones de estos productos
biotecnológicos”.
El director de EuropaBio considera de vital
importancia la comunicación a nivel europeo de estos
resultados, algo que no tuvo lugar cuando la
Comisión publicó su estudio en 2001. "Ahora que
tenemos una vez más las evidencias sobre la
seguridad de los alimentos biotecnológicos, vamos a
dar a los consumidores la oportunidad de elegir por
una variedad de alimentos seguros producidos con la
ayuda de la biotecnología moderna. Tenemos que
conseguir la aprobación de estos productos”,
concluyó. |
