University of Georgia researcher gains sunflower grants

Dr. Steve Knapp of the University of Georgia has a long professional history with sunflower. He has been a leader in sequencing the sunflower genome or genetic mapping.

Knapp has been recently awarded a number of grants to accelerate his work including

  • $1.2 million from USDA and the US Department of Defense
  • $500,000 from seed companies to better develop better DNA marker technology
  • $400,000 from the USDA Plant Genome Program and
  • $600,000 from the Binational Agriculture Research and Development Agency and the Consortium for Plant Biotechnology Research to study wild species and disease resistance. 

His research as it relates to other work at USDA and the private sector will be discussed in detail in the next issue of The Sunflower Magazine.
