Label expansion provides seed
and sweet corn growers with an effective, crop-safe herbicide
IMPACT® herbicide has received
regulatory approval for use on seed and sweet corn (including
hybrids and inbred lines) for the 2009 season. This registration
provides seed and sweet corn growers with an effective herbicide
that is crop-safe and also addresses their application window
challenges.
“For seed and sweet corn growers, IMPACT herbicide is a perfect
fit,” says Mike Bakker, BASF
Canada Corn and Bean Market Manager. “Not only will it
provide control of key problem weeds in these crops, it will
also provide these growers with a crop-safe herbicide that has a
wide window of application, fitting the specific application
needs of these growers.”
For use in sweet and seed corn, IMPACT must be tank-mixed with
atrazine, ASSIST® and UAN 28%. This tank-mix provides control of
common lamb’s-quarters, common ragweed, Eastern black
nightshade, green pigweed, lady’s-thumb, redroot pigweed and
wild mustard. As a Group 27 herbicide, IMPACT also provides
control of triazine and Group 2 resistant weed biotypes. For
additional control of grass weeds, seed and sweet corn growers
can precede their IMPACT application with a pre-emergence
application of a residual herbicide such as FRONTIER®.
Equally as important as its weed control properties, IMPACT
delivers the combined advantages of crop safety with an
application window that spans the 1- to 7-leaf stage of corn.
For many seed and sweet corn growers, the safety and flexibility
of IMPACT fills an unmet need. “How (a herbicide) is going to
affect an inbred is one of the biggest things we worry about,
and we have limitations on many herbicides that we can and
cannot use. We saw no negative effects on the corn itself from
the IMPACT,” says Rick VanLaecke, seed corn grower from
Courtland, Ontario. “The most appealing thing about the IMPACT
is the fact that you’ve got this broad window of application.
When planting the two inbreds quite often we can have one
delayed by as much as 4 to 5 leaves compared to the next. What
IMPACT does is keep that window of opportunity open.”
For the 2009 season, growers can also save with IMPACT. IMPACT
herbicide is a qualifying and rewards product within the 2009
GrowForwardTM Rewards Program, allowing growers to save up to 12
per cent on leading BASF corn and soybean herbicides.
