Farmers who planted Genuity™
Roundup Ready 2 Yield® soybeans this season say they are
optimistic and impressed by the performance of this
next-generation technology at this point in the season.
More than 16,000 farmers planted Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield
soybeans with the Acceleron™ seed treatment on about 1.5 million
acres across the U.S. Midwest in 2009. With harvest approaching,
many of these growers are encouraged by the flowering, pod fill
and overall plant health they are observing – all early
physiological indicators of strong yield potential.
Bill Couser, who farms in Nevada, Iowa, said he is impressed
with the performance he is seeing. “My Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2
Yield beans are coming along really well,” Couser said. “They’re
my nicest-looking beans and the furthest along so far. They are
flowering and starting to pod. They are by far the most uniform
fields as far as standability, and everything just looks
superb.”
New Castle, Ohio, farmer Steve Mumma described the appearance of
his Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield beans as “terrific.”
“Compared to the original Roundup Ready® technology, these beans
are really podding well,” he noted. “At this stage, the growth
and overall plant health is impressive, so I’m expecting good
results. No question on that.”
A number of farmers noted that their Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2
Yield beans are performing well despite challenging weather this
season. “We had a lot of wet weather, which set us back two
weeks at planting, but my Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield beans
are looking good,” said Brian Renbarger of Greentown, Indiana.
“There’s a good amount of pods per plant with a lot of blooms on
them. I have favorable expectations for these beans in August.”
In several years of Monsanto field trials and in production
fields last season, this next-generation technology demonstrated
a significant yield advantage over original Roundup Ready
soybeans and has consistently shown excellent plant health and
early season vigor. This higher yield potential was also
attributed in part to a higher average number of beans per pod
when Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybeans were compared with
the first-generation technology.
“Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield technology delivers more power
in the pod,” said Lisa Flynn, Monsanto U.S. Soy Traits Marketing
Manager. “More beans per pod results in higher yield and profit
potential for U.S. soybean farmers.”
Flynn added that Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield is the only
soybean biotech trait on the market designed to boost yields.
Using advanced insertion and selection technologies, Monsanto
scientists were able to select a new biotech event where the
Roundup Ready gene is located in a region of the soybean genome
that has a positive impact on yield. Doing so delivers all the
benefits of the Roundup Ready weed control system with
significantly higher yield potential than the first-generation
technology.
Yield enhancements made possible by Monsanto’s family of
Genuity™ traits support the company’s sustainable agriculture
goals of helping farmers double yields by the year 2030 to meet
growing global demand for food, feed and fuel.
For the 2010 season, Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybeans
will be expanded to additional geographies with many new
varieties available in the upper Midwest, and introduced for the
first time to some of the largest soybean-producing areas of the
southern U.S.
