Europa Bio, the European
Association for Bioindustries expresses disappointment that the
Member States could not reach agreement to approve these
products, despite the many scientific confirmations of the
safety of two biotech maize products. The products should now be
voted on by Ministers at an upcoming Environment Council
meeting.
“Today’s vote demonstrates that several Member States are
prepared to stand by the science and support farmers’ access to
safe products. We urge more Member States to vote according to
the scientific assessments of EFSA, the calls from Europe’s
farmers1 and the agricultural community for more choice and put
an end to the 11 year moratorium on new biotech crops for
cultivation”, says Nathalie Moll, Executive Director of Green
Biotechnology Europe at EuropaBio.
“In so doing, these Member
States would give farmers new tools to meet the dual challenges
of feeding a growing population and minimising the impact of
farming on the environment”, she added.
EuropaBio supports the Commission in achieving its goal of
ensuring the proper functioning of the biotech approval system
established by the Member States themselves. When these biotech
cultivation applications are voted in Council next, Member
States are urged to follow EU law and approve these products
without further and unjustified delay.

fields of research and development, testing, manufacturing and
distribution of biotechnology products. It has 68 corporate
members operating worldwide, 5 associate members, 4 BioRegions

Europea de Bioempresas quiere expresar su decepción en relación
a la autorización de cultivo de los eventos modificados
genéticamente Bt 11 y 1507. Que el apoyo a la autorización de
estos eventos hubiera alcanzado una mayoría cualificada hoy
hubiera reflejado la confianza en los argumentos científicos que
han garantizado la seguridad de estos dos productos
biotecnológicos.
“La votación de hoy demuestra que varios Estados Miembros están
preparados para ponerse al lado de la ciencia y apoyar y
garantizar el acceso de los agricultores a productos seguros.
Desde aquí instamos a más Estados Miembros de la UE a votar de
acuerdo con los informes positivos de la Agencia Europea de
Seguridad Alimentaria y a la reclamación de los agricultores
comunitarios que exigen libertad para elegir y el fin de los 11
años de moratoria al cultivo de nuevos eventos modificados
genéticamente”, comentó Nathalie Moll, directora Ejecutiva de
Agrobiotecnología de Europa Bio.
“La Unión Europea debería facilitar a los agricultores nuevas
herramientas para enfrentar al doble reto que supone alimentar a
una población en aumento y minimizar el impacto de la
agricultura en el medio ambiente”, añadió.
Por último, Europa Bio apoya a la Comisión Europea en su
objetivo de asegurar un correcto funcionamiento del sistema de
aprobaciones de nuevos eventos biotecnológicos establecido por
los Estados Miembros. Por ello, solicita que el Consejo de
Ministros comunitario escuche a los agricultores y a los
científicos para ajustarse a la ley y aprobar estos productos
sin añadir un retraso injustificado. |
