BASF Canada announces new CLEARFIELD lentil varieties for 2009 - Lentil growers will now have access to herbicide-tolerant lentil varieties across every lentil market class

January 13, 2009

BASF Canada officially announced the introduction of three new varieties for its CLEARFIELD® Production System for Lentils today at the Crop Production Show in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. CDC Impala CL, CDC Maxim CL and CDC Impress CL bring the CLEARFIELD lentil offering up to six varieties spanning each lentil market class.

“The introduction of CLEARFIELD lentils meant lentil growers could forget about weeds, and the strong agronomics of each of the six available CLEARFIELD lentil varieties means they can focus on yield. Coupled with the effective, crop safe, weed control of registered CLEARFIELD herbicides, CLEARFIELD lentils offer lentil growers the best way to grow lentils,” says Christina Stroud, CLEARFIELD lentil brand manager, BASF Canada.

New varieties CDC Impala CL, CDC Maxim CL and CDC Impress CL will be released with limited availability in 2009. CDC Impala CL (extra-small red) is a Rosetown type lentil with good Ascochyta and Anthracnose (Race 1) resistance and early maturity. CDC Maxim CL (small red) is a Redberry type lentil with good Ascochyta and Anthracnose (Race 1) resistance and early maturity. CDC Impress CL (medium green) is based on CDC Meteor with good Ascochyta resistance and early-medium maturity. In 2007 and 2008 co-op and regional trials, these varieties yielded an average 92 percent (CDC Impala CL), 101 percent (CDC Maxim CL) and 94 percent (CDC Impress CL) of the comparison variety, CDC Milestone.

These new varieties join an existing lineup, including CDC Imperial CL (extra-small red), CDC Impact CL (small red) and CDC Improve CL (large green). “In grower-applied field trials in 2008, these varieties yielded on average as good or better than the conventional varieties,” explains Mark Kuchuran, senior technical development specialist, BASF Canada. “Across 17 trials, CDC Impact CL yielded an average 27 bu/ac compared to an average 26 bu/ac yield for commonly grown conventional red varieties; across 10 trials CDC Imperial CL yielded an average 25 bu/ac compared to an average 23 bu/ac yield for commonly grown conventional red varieties; and, across 4 trials CDC Improve CL yielded an average 32 bu/ac compared to an average 29 bu/ac for the conventional large green lentil CDC Plato.”

CLEARFIELD lentil growers have the option of three registered CLEARFIELD lentil herbicides – ODYSSEY® DLX, ODYSSEY and SOLO®. Each are registered across all soil zones, provide post-emergent weed control superior to conventional herbicides and provide the highest level of crop safety. “We’ve seen that the maturity of conventional lentils can be delayed 7 to 10 days as a result of crop injury and stunting when sprayed with commonly used lentil herbicides,” says Kuchuran. “Whereas CLEARFIELD lentils have shown no delay in maturity when sprayed with CLEARFIELD lentil herbicides.” This crop safety, combined with the early, season-long weed control, helps eliminate weed competition, allowing for more of the variety’s yield potential to be realized.

“With more new CLEARFIELD lentil varieties coming down the pipeline, growers will continue to have access to varieties with leading agronomics and the CLEARFIELD trait,” says Stroud. “This continued growth is a direct result of the successful partnership between BASF, the Crop Development Centre (CDC) and the Saskatchewan Pulse Growers (SPG), in which we each play a significant role in the long-term sustainability of the system. It’s through the BASF CLEARFIELD trait, CDC’s variety breeding expertise and SPG’s variety release program that we’re able to continue to bring new CLEARFIELD lentil varieties to growers.”

As part of the system’s long-term sustainability, CLEARFIELD lentil growers are required to sign an annual CLEARFIELD Commitment, regardless of where, or from whom, their seed is purchased. A CLEARFIELD Confirm™ test, which ensures the herbicide tolerance of the seed, is also required annually as part of this CLEARFIELD Commitment.
