BASF Canada has received
registration for VIPER® herbicide from the Pest Management
Regulatory Agency (PMRA). With this registration, field pea
growers have a new broad-spectrum herbicide that delivers a new
way to control weeds in field peas.
“Weeds have a powerful new enemy and peas have a new ally,”
stated Chris Vander Kant, brand manager for Western herbicides
for BASF Canada. “Proven by its performance in 29 GrowForwardTM
Yield Challenge sites across Western Canada this past summer,
VIPER delivers terrific control of both grasses and broadleaf
weeds with unprecedented rotational freedom.”
VIPER has a new mode action which delivers solid weed resistance
management, for both contact and systemic weed control. As a
result, this herbicide controls resistant biotypes of wild
mustard and volunteer canola. VIPER also has strong activity on
resistant biotypes of kochia.
“The VIPER did very well on everything, it was probably the
cleanest peas we had,” said Mike Adelman, a grower from
Strasbourg, Saskatchewan. “We’ll definitely be using VIPER again
next year and a lot more acres of it.”
VIPER, which is registered for all soil zones across Western
Canada, also offers excellent rotational freedom. The year
following an application of VIPER, pea growers have the ability
to seed any type of canola (including CLEARFIELD® XCEED™
canola), canary seed, chickpeas, corn, lentils (including
CLEARFIELD varieties), durum wheat, flax, spring barley, spring
wheat, sunflowers (including CLEARFIELD varieties), field peas
and tame oats.
VIPER controls such broadleaf weeds as cow cockle, green
smartweed, lamb’s-quarters, redroot pigweed, shepherd’s-purse,
stinkweed, volunteer canola (including CLEARFIELD canola),
volunteer lentils (including CLEARFIELD lentils) and wild
mustard, including resistant biotypes. It also provides strong
activity against cleavers, wild buckwheat and kochia, including
resistant biotypes.
In addition to wild oats, including resistant biotypes, VIPER
controls barnyard grass, green foxtail (wild millet), Persian
darnel, volunteer barley, volunteer canary seed, volunteer durum
wheat, volunteer spring wheat (excluding CLEARFIELD wheat),
volunteer tame oats and yellow foxtail. VIPER also provides
suppression of Japanese Brome grass.
“VIPER is another example of a made-for-Canada innovation from
BASF,” continued Vander Kant. “We’re committed to helping
growers get the most from every acre and VIPER reaffirms that
commitment.”
