BASF Canada announces new CLEARFIELD wheat variety for 2009: CDC Abound offers an additional opportunity for growers to produce the cleanest wheat possible

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada
January 13, 2009

BASF Canada announced today that its newest CLEARFIELD® wheat variety, CDC Abound, will have full commercial availability for the 2009 season. With the addition of CDC Abound, wheat growers now have access to two herbicide-tolerant CLEARFIELD wheat varieties, allowing them to produce the cleanest wheat in any field, anytime.

“CDC Abound is the latest high-yielding CLEARFIELD wheat variety to join the CLEARFIELD Production System for Wheat,” said Harley House, CLEARFIELD wheat brand manager with BASF, from the Crop Production Show in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. “Bred by the Crop Development Centre (CDC), and available exclusively from Viterra, CDC Abound offers growers improved yield potential, combined with the proven herbicide tolerance of the CLEARFIELD system.”

CDC Abound is a Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS) wheat variety with resistance to common bunt and loose smut, and moderate resistance to leaf and stem rust. Compared to Superb, CDC Abound matures 1 day earlier, has similar protein and test weight. In 2007 Proven Performance Checks, CDC Abound yielded 102 percent of Superb. Compared to AC Barrie, CDC Abound is 2 cm shorter in height. And, in 2007 Viterra Market Development trials, CDC Abound yielded 119 percent of AC Barrie.

With the addition of CDC Abound to the CLEARFIELD wheat variety portfolio, growers now have access to two varieties, including CDC Imagine. Both varieties, available from Viterra retails only, are recognized globally as non-genetically engineered. This ensures growers have the same unrestricted marketing opportunities as conventional wheat varieties.

“In addition to the strong agronomics and yield potential behind the varieties, a significant advantage of CLEARFIELD wheat for growers is the weed control capabilities of the system,” adds House. “The CLEARFIELD wheat herbicides give growers the opportunity to tackle more challenging weed control problems with a wheat crop, such as volunteer barley or kochia. This capability, for example, means growers could grow wheat after barley, or take on that extra piece of rented land that has a heavy weed infestation with the confidence that it can be cleaned up completely.”

ALTITUDE FX® and ADRENALIN® SC, registered CLEARFIELD wheat herbicides, provide 1-Pass control of key broadleaf and grassy weeds, including volunteer barley and other volunteer cereals in wheat. ALTITUDE FX controls cleavers, hemp-nettle, chickweed and even heavy populations of wild buckwheat and kochia, including Group-2-resistance biotypes.

As introduced in 2008, the CLEARFIELD Commitment for Wheat now allows growers to save and re-grow their CLEARFIELD wheat seed in future years, providing it passes CLEARFIELD Confirm™ testing. Growers will continue to be required to sign an annual CLEARFIELD Commitment, regardless of whether they are producing certified or farm-saved CLEARFIELD wheat, and, for the first year of CLEARFIELD wheat production, will be required to purchase certified seed.

Growers wishing to produce CDC Abound for the first time in 2009 will be required to purchase seed from their Viterra retail for the 2009 production year. However, they are free to save and re-grow CDC Abound seed on their farm in following years. If re-growing saved seed, a no-charge CLEARFIELD Confirm test is also required for each year of production to ensure that the seed meets the required tolerance to CLEARFIELD wheat herbicides.
