Vegetable varieties that add value
at all levels of the supply chain are the focus of
Nunhems’ stand at A-05 in
Hall 1.2 at Fruit Logistica in Berlin from February 4-6, 2009.
Under the theme “Success tastes better together,” the company
will present innovative products and concepts that have been
developed in close cooperation with customers and partners to
meet today’s multiple demands. With Intense, the world’s first
non-leaking tomato, and Magenta, the cantaloupe melon line with
excellent flavor and distinctive internal flesh color, Nunhems
offers two top products that generate benefits for growers,
processors, retailers, food-service providers and consumers.
“Today’s vegetables come in dices and slices,” says Paco
González, Nunhems Global Head of Downstream Management. “The
trend towards fresh-cut solutions and convenience requires seed
varieties with additional qualities: excellent cutting
characteristics, year-round supply and high performance during
processing, transport, packaging and storage. Nunhems sees an
enormous potential in collaborating with partners along the
vegetable supply chain. Together, we create products that are
tailored to the needs of consumers and food-service
professionals.”
Nunhems’ Intense, winner of the Fruit Logistica Innovation Award
2008, is the ideal tomato for fresh-cut and food-service
applications such as in salads, sandwiches, hamburgers and
pizzas. Since its introduction in 2007, production has
multiplied 20 times. The tomato’s firm flesh ensures what seemed
impossible before: pre-sliced tomatoes that retain their shape
and fresh appearance for several days. Intense only loses 7
percent of its weight in 10 days – almost half of the loss that
standard varieties undergo over the same period of time. The
oval shape allows for a high number of uniform slices per
tomato, and the deep red color adds to its attractive
appearance.
In the melons segment, Nunhems’ Magenta line, with its
consistent round shape, distinctive internal color and small
seed cavity, is ideal for both whole and fresh-cut applications.
The high quality of Magenta melons has lead to a consistently
growing market share in the cantaloupe category, enabling the
production of more than 100,000 tons of Magenta fruits in 2008.
This has earned Magenta a leading position in this segment on
the European market. Magenta melons are very adaptable to a
variety of growing regions – including South America, Africa and
Europe – making them available for consumers year-round.
Nunhems will be presenting its recent developments for the
fresh-cut sector also at the Freshconex Congress on February 3.
In addition to Nunhems’ participation at Fruit Logistica (A-05,
Hall 1.2), Bayer CropScience will be showcasing its Food Chain
Partnership concept at the stand C-14, Hall 20.
