To help growers understand refuge
requirements for all MYCOGEN® brand products — including new
MYCOGEN SmartStax™ hybrids —
Mycogen Seeds is adding a refuge icon to seed tags and to
product catalogs. The move comes on the heels of the recent U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registration of SmartStax
— a new trait combination that offers the broadest spectrum of
above- and below-ground insect protection. The EPA registration
included a reduced refuge requirement for growers who plant
hybrids with SmartStax.
When
they are available for planting next season, MYCOGEN SmartStax
hybrids will require only a 5 percent refuge in the Corn Belt,
while traditional Bt hybrids require a 20 percent refuge. In
cotton-growing states, the refuge for SmartStax hybrids is 20
percent instead of the traditional 50 percent requirement.1
“We want growers to be informed about the refuge requirements at
the time of purchase, which is why the new icons will be
incorporated in our seed guide catalog, as well as on all of our
Bt hybrid bag tags. The icons clearly identify the refuge
requirement of either 5 percent or 20 percent for the Corn
Belt.” says Keith Porter, agronomy services manager, Mycogen
Seeds. “The icons will help growers plan their seed supply,
taking into consideration the amount of seed they need for their
required refuge acres,” he says, stressing that compliance with
EPA-mandated refuge guidelines is critical to protecting all Bt
technology.
The company also has launched a new Web site,
www.MycogenSmartStax.com, to educate growers about the new
MYCOGEN SmartStax™ technology. It features in-depth information
about the benefits of MYCOGEN SmartStax, including the broadest
spectrum of insect control, the multiple modes of action and a
customizable yield calculator to help growers determine the
value of SmartStax on their acres.
“We developed the site to meet the needs of today’s growers,”
says Brent Stauffacher, SmartStax product manager, Mycogen
Seeds. “Being able to calculate the yield advantage helps
growers understand how these new hybrids with elite genetics can
impact the bottom line.”
MYCOGEN® SmartStax hybrids have built-in, season-long protection
from the broadest spectrum of above- and below-ground
yield-robbing pests, including first- and second-generation
European corn borer, southwestern corn borer, northern corn
rootworm, western corn rootworm, Mexican corn rootworm, fall
armyworm, western bean cutworm, black cutworm, corn earworm and
sugarcane borer.
The company soon will announce a full lineup of new MYCOGEN
SmartStax hybrids for 2010 planting. For more information about
