Speaking today at the
International Chamber of Commerce’s (ICC) 6th World Chambers
Congress in Kuala Lumpur,
Syngenta CEO Mike Mack underlined the importance of
agricultural technology in supporting the environment. “The role
of science and technology must go beyond increasing productivity
by also enabling us to safeguard nature. This will preserve land
and biodiversity, and maximize water resources,” said Mack.
Mike Mack reminded the audience that “throughout time,
biodiversity and a growing world population have had a fragile
coexistence due to the basic human needs of food and shelter and
rising living standards. Technology can play an increasingly
critical role in alleviating these tensions.” This is especially
true for agriculture; technology will increase yields while
avoiding the unnecessary cultivation of new land and will allow
more efficient use of water.
“The headlines from the past year on the food crisis have been
replaced by those on the economic crisis. The economic climate
has also changed conditions for many growers around the world.
What has not changed is the long term nature of the challenge to
produce enough food for tomorrow’s needs and to do so
symbiotically with the world we live in,” Mack said.

Syngenta-CEO unterstreicht auf ICC-Konferenz die Bedeutung von
Technologien in der Landwirtschaft zum Schutz der Umwelt
In seiner Rede auf dem 6.
Weltkongress der Internationalen Handelskammer (ICC) in Kuala
Lumpur hat Mike Mack, CEO von Syngenta, heute hervorgehoben, wie
wichtig Technologien in der Landwirtschaft für den Erhalt der
Umwelt sind. „Die Rolle von Wissenschaft und Technologie ist
nicht auf die Steigerung der Produktivität beschränkt. Sie
ermöglichen uns auch die Natur zu erhalten, Land zu bewahren,
Artenvielfalt zu fördern sowie Wasserressourcen optimal zu
nutzen“, sagte Mack.
Mike Mack erläuterte auch, dass „Artenvielfalt und eine
wachsende Weltbevölkerung in einem Spannungsverhältnis stehen.
Dies ist auf die Befriedigung der grundlegenden Bedürfnisse nach
Nahrung, Wohnraum und steigendem Lebensstandard zurückzuführen.
Technologien können eine bedeutendere Rolle einnehmen, um diese
Herausforderungen zu bewältigen.“ Das gilt insbesondere in der
Landwirtschaft: Der Einsatz von Technologien führt zu höheren
Ernteerträgen, ohne dass zusätzliches Land bebaut werden muss;
auch Wasser kann so effizienter genutzt werden.
„Die aktuelle Wirtschaftskrise hat die Nahrungsmittelkrise des
vergangenen Jahres in der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung verdrängt.
Die wirtschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen für viele Landwirte
weltweit haben sich ebenfalls geändert. Was sich nicht geändert
hat, ist die langfristige Herausforderung, ausreichend
Nahrungsmittel für den Bedarf von morgen zu produzieren und dies
in Symbiose mit unserer Umwelt“, sagte Mack.

Invité à prendre la parole au 6e
Congrès Mondial des Chambres de Commerce organisé par la Chambre
de Commerce Internationale (CCI), à Kuala Lumpur, Mike Mack, CEO
de Syngenta, a souligné l’importance des technologies agricoles
dans la préservation de l’environnement. «Le rôle de la science
et des technologies doit aller au-delà de l’amélioration de la
productivité mais doit aussi nous permettre de sauvegarder la
nature. Nous pourrons ainsi préserver les terres et la
biodiversité et utiliser au mieux les ressources en eau», a
précisé Mike Mack.
Mike Mack a rappelé à l’assistance que, «au fil du temps, la
biodiversité et une population mondiale sans cesse croissante
ont vécu une cohabitation difficile en raison des besoins
fondamentaux des êtres humains en matière alimentaire et
d’habitat et du fait de l’élévation du niveau de vie. Les
technologies peuvent jouer un rôle de plus en plus déterminant
dans la résolution de ces tensions.» Ceci est vrai en
particulier pour l’agriculture; les technologies amélioreront
les rendements tout en évitant la mise en culture superflue de
nouvelles terres et permettront de faire un meilleur usage des
réserves d’eau.
«Les gros titres consacrés l’année dernière à la crise
alimentaire ont été remplacés par ceux relatifs à la crise
économique. Le climat économique a aussi modifié la donne pour
de nombreux agriculteurs dans le monde entier. Ce qui n’a pas
changé en revanche, c’est le défi à long terme que constitue la
nécessité de produire suffisamment d’aliments pour répondre aux
besoins de demain en bonne intelligence avec le monde dans
lequel nous vivons», a ajouté Mike Mack. |
