The Australian Government today announced the appointment of Dr Joe Smith as the new Gene Technology Regulator from 23 March 2009.

Previously, Dr Smith was the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority from 2003 until 2007.

In making the announcement Senator the Hon Jan McLucas thanked the former Regulator Dr Sue Meek and most recently Ms Elizabeth Flynn who has been acting in the role.

As Gene Technology Regulator, Dr Smith will oversee the legal framework that regulates genetically modified organisms – such as plants and animals – in Australia in order to protect human health and safety, and the environment.

The Gene Technology Regulator is a statutory office holder responsible for administering the Gene Technology Act 2000.

Dr Smith has had extensive leadership experience in regulatory roles and has a diverse scientific, technical and government background. Dr Smith leaves his position as a Senior Executive Officer with the Commonwealth Department of Human Services to take on the role as the Regulator.

Dr Smith’s appointment is significant and will ensure that the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator maintains its reputation as a high performing organisation.
