PICKSEED announces superior forage products for 2002

Lindsay, Ontario
May 2,  2001

Intensive crop production practices evident in corn and soybean production are now available in forage production.

As farm operations expand and diversify, more and more dairy and beef producers are producing cash crops. Crop rotations involving the big three - forage, corn and soybean, or livestock based farms, can benefit from the new seven-point forage program being introduced by PICKSEED Canada Inc. for 2002 planting.

Key to these products is PICKSEED 2065MF alfalfa. This newest variety offers significant, tangible improvements. Included are:

  • Superior persistence, especially into the 3rd production year.
  • Superior re-growth - reducing the recovery period from 45 days to 36-39 days, depending on growing conditions.

Additionally, PICKSEED 2065MF alfalfa has higher feeding quality with a multifoliolate expression rate exceeding 70%; plus very broad Pest Resistance and a Wisconsin Disease Resistance Index (DRI) of 29 out of 30.

Four of the new products will be available with TimPro timothy; the new timothy variety with improved levels of protein, higher Cell Wall Digestibility and lower NDF (higher potential intake).

Superior re-growth means higher overall yields – under intensive management many growers should be able to squeeze an additional cut from their fields. Combined with the superior persistence of PICKSEED 2065MF alfalfa growers can count on reliable, profitable production throughout their rotation.

In addition, when the forage rotation is up, the strong remaining alfalfa stand will contribute to the soil structure and yield of the following crop.
