International Rice Research Institute chooses Genomic Solutions research system

Ann Arbor, Michigan
October 4,  2001

New alliance will help expand essential rice research and provide needed technology and training to IRRI partners

  • PerkinElmer Life Sciences, the distribution partner for Genomic Solutions, will be a strategic partner with IRRI
  • Complete GeneTAC genomics research system purchased by the Institute
  • Move will help advance rice research throughout Asia

A genomic research system developed and manufactured by Genomic Solutions Inc. (Nasdaq NM: GNSL - news) has been purchased by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), a member of the consultative Group on International Agricultural Research.

Genomics system will aid research in developing nations

  • IRRI has purchased a complete Genomic Solutions GeneTAC(TM) Biochip System from PerkinElmer Life Sciences to establish a new microarray facility at IRRI, including the GeneTAC G3 Microarray Workstation, LS IV Scanner and HybStation. PerkinElmer will also work closely with IRRI to provide microarray products, detection reagents, expertise as well as technical resources.
  • According to Dr. Hei Leung, leader of Functional Genomics project at IRRI, "One of our objectives is to promote accessibility of genomic tools to rice research institutions in developing countries. Microarrays are an important component of such technologies that allow us to look at many genes of the rice plant at one time. Currently, the expense of such
technologies has excluded access by researchers with limited resources. With the establishment of the Microarray facility at IRRI, we are in a better position to provide research support and training to our partners."
  • "By assisting IRRI, PerkinElmer Life Sciences is helping many research institutions advance their rice research in Asia. I believe it's not only good business sense but a good cause for the company. I hope we see more examples of such cooperate citizenship in supporting important scientific research in the less developed countries," said Hei Leung.
  • "We are pleased that IRRI has chosen PerkinElmer as a partner in outfitting its new microarray facility," said John Engel, Executive Vice President and President of PerkinElmer Life Sciences. "By providing a full complement of Genomic Solutions GeneTAC instruments and PerkinElmer reagents, as well as technical expertise, PerkinElmer will play a critical role in helping IRRI advance rice genomic research. In cooperation with our strategic partner Genomic Solutions, we have been able to offer IRRI the benefits of a complete microarray system."

Alliances enhanced by strong manufacturer/distributor relationship

  • According to Christine Ethier, Vice President for International Business at Genomic Solutions, the sale of a GeneTAC Biochip System by PerkinElmer to IRRI is an excellent example of the strong, global distribution relationship between Genomic Solutions and PerkinElmer Life Sciences. "That relationship will make possible numerous other such
partnerships between Genomic Solutions, PerkinElmer Life Sciences and key, global research organizations undertaking research designed to help persons in developing countries."
  • Jeffrey S. Williams, President and CEO of Genomic Solutions, notes that the relationship with PerkinElmer Life Sciences, the company's global distribution partner, continues to strengthen, fueled by Genomic Solutions' relevant mix of products. "While the GeneTAC Biochip System helps hasten the vital work of humanitarian organizations like IRRI, our proven Investigator(TM) Proteomic System also is helping life sciences researchers improve the health status of all people through drug discovery and development," Williams adds. "In concert with PerkinElmer, we're working to be a single-source of enabling technology for genomics and proteomics researchers around the world." According to Mr. Engel, "We expect continued success from our partnership with Genomic Solutions on this important program and other critical customer applications in genomics and proteomics."

About IRRI

IRRI is a nonprofit agricultural research and training center established to improve the well-being of present and future generations of the farmers and consumers, particularly those with low incomes. It is dedicated to helping farmers in developing countries provide more food on limited land using less water, less labor, and fewer chemical inputs, without harming the environment.

About PerkinElmer Life Sciences

PerkinElmer Life Sciences distributes Genomic Solutions products, exclusively, in all countries except the US and Japan. The relationship, which began in January, 2000, was recently expanded and extended to the end of 2002. The Genomic Solutions offerings complement the genomic and proteomic products manufactured by PerkinElmer, enabling PerkinElmer to provide a complete solution to customers performing research in the high growth markets of genomics and proteomics.

About Genomic Solutions Inc.

The company designs, develops, manufactures, markets and sells instruments, software, consumables and services used to determine the activity level of genes and to isolate, identify and characterize proteins. The company's products and systems, marketed under the GeneTAC Biochip System, Investigator Proteomics System and GeneMAP(TM) preprinted arrays brands, enable researchers to perform complex, high volume experiments at a lower cost and in less time than traditional techniques.
