Dow AgroSciences outlines glyphosate strategy
Indianapolis, IN
January 19, 1999

Dow AgroSciences LLC today outlined its glyphosate strategy, saying it plans to become a major player in the global glyphosate market and that glyphosate will be a key product for the company.

Dow AgroSciences and Monsanto Company today announced a global, multi-year toll manufacturing agreement that also licenses Dow AgroSciences the rights to Monsanto's glyphosate herbicide registration data. The agreement will allow Dow AgroSciences to register its own brand of glyphosate herbicide for sale globally. However, Dow AgroSciences will not be able to reference Monsanto data when registering its products for use in Japan and in lawn and garden uses. Additionally, the agreement allows Dow AgroSciences to use its own brand of glyphosate herbicide over the top of Roundup Ready soybeans and cotton in the year 2000 in the United States, and beginning in 2001, over the top of Roundup Ready corn in the United States.

This agreement means the company will speed market penetration by acquiring early access to
a global registration package.

Dow AgroSciences' strategy is to provide complete crop herbicide solutions to growers and
farmers worldwide through various straight glyphosate formulations as well as mixtures with its
own proprietary herbicides. These new Dow AgroSciences products will be used on both
traditional crops as well as over the top of Roundup Ready soybeans, cotton and corn in the
United States. By incorporating glyphosate into its strong herbicide portfolio, Dow
AgroSciences will be able to provide farmers a complete range of solutions for their weed
problems.

Dow AgroSciences is securing its long term competitive position in the glyphosate market by
continuing to invest in the manufacture and development of glyphosate. The company plans to
achieve that goal several ways; by implementing an effective toll manufacturing agreement with
Monsanto, by utilizing The Dow Chemical Company's superior position in the production of
basic raw materials needed to produce glyphosate, and by expanding and building on the
company's own proprietary process technology as well as glyphosate know-how gained from
the Sentrachem acquisition.

Dow AgroSciences LLC, based in Indianapolis, Indiana, is a global leader in providing pest
management and biotechnology products that improve the quality and quantity of the earth's
food supply and contribute to the safety, health and quality of life of the world's growing
population. The company employs more than 3,000 people in over 50 countries and has
worldwide sales of more than $2 billion. Dow AgroSciences is a wholly-owned subsidiary of
The Dow Chemical Company.
