Feeding study shows advantage of new corn bred specifically for hogs
Owensboro, Kentucky
September 17,1999

A recent grow/finish swine feeding trial conducted for ExSeed Genetics L.L.C demonstrated that NutriDense(TM) corn has a superior feeding value as compared to a commodity com-plus-fat diet.

NutriDense, a trademarked nutritionally enhanced product, contains a stacked set of genetic traits specifically designed to deliver the animal feeder significant benefits over commodity corn.

The feeding study used 144 split sex fed (barrows and gilts fed separately) genetically lean pigs. The NutriDense-fed pigs outperformed the commodity corn-plus-fat fed barrows in average daily gain (ADG) by 3.5 percent and gilts by 2.7 percent. Feed efficiency of NutriDense was 2.7 percent greater by the barrows and 3.3 percent in the gilts. The improved performance resulted in an advantage of $0.03/lb. of gain in barrows and $0.028/lb. of gain in the gilts. This equates to an increased value of $6.63/barrow and $5.72/gilt, which includes a minimum of $0.18/bu. uplift over yellow dent corn.

NutriDense is not a "transgenic" product and therefore not subject to issues related to GMO regulations. In this and previous university studies, NutriDense has shown the following advantages over commodity corn:

  • Elevated protein content
  • 30 percent more lysine
  • 50 percent more sulfur amino acids
  • 18 percent more threonine
  • Twice the amount of tryptophan
  • Improved nutritional consistency
  • Extra energy, as increased oil content
  • Higher levels of phosphorus
  • Extremely good palatability

"Now is an exciting time in the area of biotechnology as it applies to com, especially for animal feed," noted Jerry Weigel, director of nutrition and regulatory affairs for ExSeed Genetics. "We believe the end user is the driving force in designing the grains of the future." ExSeed Genetics specializes in developing the traits desired by end users and then markets NutriDense and other ExSeed Enhanced(TM) traits through its subsidiary, Thurston Genetics.

"The feed industry is the No. I consumer of domestic corn and corn makes up at least 67 percent of the diet," noted Weigel, "yet com is consistently the most inconsistent ingredient in the ration. ExSeed Genetics' technology delivers nutritional consistency in corn, resulting in improved animal performance and increased profits."
