Research study shows NutriDense LP has a 10 percent energy advantage over commodity corn

Value-enhanced com continues to show significant advantages over conventional yellow dent commodity corn.

A recent feeder pig study conducted under the direction of Dr. Roger Campbell of United Feeds, Sheridan, Indiana, concluded that NutriDense(TM) LP, a low phytate corn from ExSeed Genetics, L.L.C., contains more than 10 percent more usable energy than conventional commodity corn. That same study indicated that NutriDense contains more than 4.5 percent more available energy as compared to commodity com.

"We have known for some time that low phytate corn makes more phosphorus available to the animals in their feed and that it is naturally higher in digestible phosphorus," explains Jerry Weigel, Director of Nutrition and Regulatory Affairs for ExSeed. "This new study shows that producers continue to benefit from both NutriDense and NutriDense LP."

The United Feeds study was a screening based on pigs that were 25 days old. After a 7-day adjustment period, the pigs were given a diet consisting of 65 percent to 70 percent of the test grain, with the remaining ingredients constant, for 21 days. Pig performance was measured weekly.

Test corn Daily gain (lb) Feed intake (lb) Feed:gain
Standard yellow dent commodity corn  0.96 1.52 1.60:1
NutriDense low phytate 0.91 1.46 1.48:1
Commodity corn 0.81 1.29 1.60:1
NutriDense low phytate 1.01 1.47 1.45:1
Commodity corn 1.00 1.59 1.59:1
NutriDense  1.04 1.60 1.54:1
Commodity corn 1.06 1.76 1.76:1
NutriDense  0.93 1.45 1.56:1
Commodity corn 1.01 1.56 1.55:1
NutriDense  0.93 1.45 1.56:1

NutriDense LP worth an extra 5 cents to 10 cents per bushel over traditional yellow dent com," Weigel says. "This is in addition to the 18 cents to 25 cents per bushel for the other nutritional advantages.

"The added energy that is available to swine makes NutriDense and NutriDense LP worth the extra 5 cents to 10 cents per bushel over traditional dent corn," Weigel says. "This is in addition to the 18 cents to 25 cents per bushel for the other nutritional advantages."

ExSeed's NutriDense LP, a trademarked nutritionally enhanced product, has additional benefits to the low phytate characteristic. It has a stacked set of genetic traits specifically designed to deliver the animal feeder significant benefits over standard yellow dent corn, including at least one more unit of oil, two to three more units of quality protein, 30 percent more lysine, 50 percent more sulfur amino acids, 18 percent more threonine, twice the tryptophan, and 25 percent more of both methionine and cystine.

"Phytic acid reduces the availability of certain nutrients found in corn to the animal," Weigel explains. "NutriDense LP unlocks more of these nutrients, boosting the metabolizable energy in com. That makes NutriDense LP a better nutritional value for meat or egg production, and ultimately worth more to the corn producer."

NutriDense LP also offers tremendous environmental benefits. "Because more phosphorus is available to the animals in their feed, less phosphorus is in the animals' manure and ultimately less phosphorus is applied to the soil, which can be an environmental hazard if it leaches into the groundwater or nearby waterways, " Weigel says.

ExSeed Genetics provides value-enhanced grains to feed, food and industrial markets under the brand name ExSeed Enhanced. ExSeed Genetics works with a variety of seed and production partners within the ExSeed Contracting Network to provide animal feeders, millers and food processors ExSeed Enhanced traits in grains that add value and improve the end-use product.

ExSeed Genetics was the first company to release low phytate com varieties, NutriDense LP and Yellow Dent LP(TM) and make them available to swine and poultry producers throughout the United States.

ExSeed Genetics L.L.C., headquartered in Owensboro, Ky., was formed in 1994, and has research operations in Owensboro; Ames, Iowa; and Olivia, Minn. You can visit the ExSeed Genetics web site at www.exseed.com
