Cornell hosts first U.S.-South Korea Joint Seminar on Plant Molecular Genetics and Breeding, Dec. 11-12

Cornell University will host the first United States-Republic of Korea Joint Seminar on Plant Molecular Genetics and Breeding Dec. 11 and 12 at the Boyce Thompson Auditorium on campus. The seminar is free and open to the public.

The joint seminar is a program developed by the National Science Foundation and the Korea Science and Engineering Foundation to enhance cooperation among the science and engineering research centers in the two countries. The program involves joint research projects, seminars and scientific exchanges.

The seminar is organized by Cornell's Department of Plant Breeding, International Programs of Cornell's New York State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and the Center for Plant Molecular Genetics and Breeding Research at Seoul National University.

Opening remarks will be made by Ronnie Coffman, chair of the Department of Plant Breeding and director of International Programs in Cornell's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and Byung-Dong Kim, director of the Center for Plant Molecular Genetics and Breeding Research at Seoul National University.

Cornell-affiliated participants include:

  • Susan McCouch, associate professor of plant breeding;
  • Maureen Hanson, Liberty Hyde Bailey Professor of molecular biology and genetics;
  • Dan Klessig, president and chief executive of Boyce Thompson Institute on the Cornell campus and an adjunct professor of plant pathology;
  • Martha Mutschler, professor of plant breeding;
  • Jocelyn Rose, assistant professor of plant biology;
  • June Nasrallah, professor of plant biology;
  • Elizabeth Earle, professor of plant breeding;
  • James Giovannoni, plant molecular biologist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Boyce Thompson Institute;
  • Molly Jahn, associate professor of plant breeding;
  • Stephen Kresovich, director of Cornell's Institute for Biotechnology and Life Science Technologies, and professor of plant breeding and plant biology; and
  • graduate student Amanda Luong.
