An innovative new seed treatment combines a leading fungicide and inoculant to help soybean growers maximize yields

St. Joseph, Missouri and Des Moines, Iowa
March 22,  2001

A new combination fungicide/seed inoculant introduced by Syngenta and Urbana Laboratories allows soybean growers to inoculate seed with many times the efficacy of traditional planter box treatments and control the most common seed and soil-borne diseases of soybeans. The product combines a proven fungicide, ApronMaxx® RTA®, with a highly concentrated seed inoculant, Frozen-Prep XP™, in a one-step application with limited liquid to the seed to help avoid bridging.

ApronMaxx RTA protects against damping off and seed rots due to Pythium, Phytophthora, Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, Phomopsis and early-season Phytophthoro root rot, and suppresses seed-borne Sclerotinia and Phomopsis, according to Syngenta. Use of ApronMaxx RTA can result in improved plant stand, vigor and yield. It is an important production tool for early planted soybeans, no-till or minimum-tilled production systems, and high value seed.

Frozen-Prep XP is 100 times more concentrated than standard "ready-to-use" liquid inoculants, according to Urbana, and thus requires lower liquid seed-application rates. Also, it can be diluted and mixed with ApronMaxx RTA rather than with water. Two formulations are available. One contains Urbana’s patented TA-11 Nod + strain that has in testing demonstrated increased yield potential over traditional soybean strain inoculants. The other Frozen-Prep XP uses traditional rhizobia strains available in the market.

"This new combination of Frozen-Prep XP and ApronMaxx RTA is a more convenient, highly concentrated, slurry mix that saves soybean growers valuable time, labor and materials in a single application of the products," says Greg Waibel, General Manager, Urbana.

The concentrated formula of Frozen-Prep XP dramatically reduces the amount of liquid applied to soybean seeds that can cause seed bridging common to other liquid inoculants. The mixing process is simple in that the two products can be mixed directly in the ApronMaxx RTA 2.5 gallon jug.

Application includes four simple steps:

  1. Thaw one large jar (7,500 lbs.) of Frozen-Prep XP.
  2. Mix entire jar of Frozen-Prep XP directly into a 2 1/2 gal. jug of ApronMaxx RTA with an additional 35 fl. oz. of water. There still will be sufficient headspace at the top of the container for mixing. Shake well to provide mixing. The direct application rate (no-dilution) for Frozen-Prep XP(TM) is a mere 0.27 fl. oz. per 50 lbs. of seed – far more concentrated than the 2.1 fl. oz. required by another leading inoculant.
  3. Apply mixture to seed at 2.77 fl. oz. per 50 lbs. of seed within one hour of mixing and plant as soon as possible for best results. Re-inoculate seed if not planted within four hours after inoculation.
  4. One 2.5 gallon jug tank-mix of Frozen-Prep XP and ApronMaxx RTA ® can treat 6,400 lbs. of seed.
