The Euro 2012 - also on natural grass !

Brussels, Belgium
June 8, 2012

copy_of_pitch3.jpgThe EURO2012 kicks off on the 8th of June and for a whole month, Europe's football fans will turn their attention to Poland’s and Ukraine’s newly built football stadiums - and precisely on their playing grounds! Millions of Europeans follow their favorite players as they shoot, dribble and slide tackle - also on natural turf!

The European Seed Association (ESA) and its members promote the use of natural turf while recognizing the advantages in specific conditions of artificial turf. In our recently published report “Natural Turf: Why it remains the natural choice for football, sports and playing surfaces”, we explain the differences and show the benefits of "going green" - being by far the most sustainable, environmentally-and carbon-friendly option, natural turf releases less greenhouse gases and thus contributes in cutting the carbon footprint.

The report provides information on different factors which decision makers should take into account when deciding on the construction of new sport pitches or renewing existing ones. It clearly shows, backed up by figures, that natural turf also saves local sports clubs a significant amount of money. Due to considerable costs for initial investment, maintenance and waste management, artificial surfaces are often far higher per playing hour than natural ones.

Finally, all professional and amateur footballers will agree: there is nothing more satisfying than playing on a natural grass pitch, and numerous studies confirm that the smells and sensations that come from playing on natural grass have positive effects on health and well-being.

ESA is looking forward to seeing European football at its best. May the best team win!
