Celebrating 10 years of success for the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety

Brussels, Belgium
11 September 2013

Today, the Global Industry Coalition (GIC) congratulates the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) on the ten year anniversary of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, the supplementary treaty to the Convention on Biological Diversity that aims to ensure the safe handling, transfer and use of living modified organisms (LMOs).

The GIC, a coalition of trade associations and companies involved in plant science, seeds, agricultural biotechnology, food production, animal agriculture, human and animal health care, and the environment, was established during the negotiations on the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to provide a source for concrete, reliable and accurate information for countries involved in the global trade of living modified organisms. In the past ten years, the GIC has participated in all Protocol governing body and intersessional meetings, been an active participant in evolving discussions on Protocol implementation and provided key resources for supporting Protocol capacity-building efforts, among other contributions.  The GIC was honored to be asked to contribute to the 10th Anniversary Edition of Biosafety Protocol News, "10 Years of Promoting Safety in the Use of Biotechnology", to address the GIC's experiences and lessons learned in the establishment and implementation of national biosafety systems.

"Over the past decade, the GIC has been proud to contribute to the critical work of the Protocol through development of capacity building tools  such as The Compact and Implementation Guide that will continue to be valuable resources to the Parties for years to come," said Sarah Lukie, GIC Secretariat. "The GIC's work supporting implementation of the Protocol has allowed Parties, Governments and observers to understand firsthand the private sector's perspective, and has contributed to the global community's ability to derive maximum benefit from products of modern biotechnology without compromising the environment and human health.

"Reaching the 10 year milestone is key to the continued success of the Protocol  and its stakeholders' vision of a valuable and effective treaty that meets the needs of the global community for LMO handling, identification, transfer and use," said Lukie. "The Global Industry Coalition congratulates the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, and its Executive Director Braulio Ferreira de Souza Dias, on this impressive accomplishment"
