Monsanto sounds the alarm on glyphosate debate
Monsanto luidt de noodklok over glyfosaatdebat

Amsterdam, The Netherlands
27 November 2015

Last week Tuesday, the Lower House of the Dutch parliament held a debate on a proposed ban on herbicides outside agriculture. Glyphosate, the active substance in widely-used herbicides such as Roundup, produced by Monsanto, falls under this proposed ban. During the debate, a number of political parties raised serious questions about the proposal, ranging from the lack of technical need to the lack of legal basis. This coming Tuesday, the Lower House will vote on these motions, providing further clarity whether or not a ban will be implemented. Monsanto calls to all parties involved to take all relevant facts into account in this discussion.

No risk to public health

All crop protection products approved by the Ctgb (the autonomous administrative body responsible for the scientific review and registration of crop protection products in the Netherlands) have been tested in terms of their risk to humans, animals and the environment. Additionally, glyphosate complies with all EU requirements, a recent announcement by EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) confirmed that scientific studies prove the history of safe use of glyphosate. Moreover, EFSA, said it is ‘highly unlikely’ that glyphosate is carcinogenic.

Dutch drinking water quality is not threatened

Glyphosate products are an important tool for crop protection in the Netherlands and are used extensively. It is therefore possible that traces can be found in surface water. This, however, does not constitute a risk to drinking water safety, as glyphosate, like many other substances, is efficiently removed before coming out of the tap as drinking water. No extra purification measures are required for glyphosate, and a ban will thus not lead to any changes in the purification methods and costs. A targeted approach aimed at stimulating the safe use of glyphosate is instead advised, as an example, the DOB method (Sustainable Weed Management) has in the period between 2004-2010 reduced glyphosate emissions by around 30%.

Are alternatives much better?

Possible alternatives for weed control have not been adequately tested in terms of user safety. Consumers will, for example, readily resort to salt or cleaning vinegar, without realising the significant environmental risks attached to these products. Professional users will have to use alternatives like brushing, burning or hot water, which will, along with other negative effects, lead to higher emissions of particulates and CO2. What’s more, municipalities in anticipation of the prospective ban, have stopped using chemical herbicides and face disappointing results. These include complaints by citizens about weed nuisance and cost increases by a factor of 2-3 times, as many local media wrote about in the past half year.

Conclusion:

The proposed Draft Decree has no sound scientific or legal basis, and will ultimately have a far-reaching negative impact for both society and the environment. The purpose should be to protect public health and to improve water quality. Monsanto understands the government’s objectives, but believes that the measures are disproportionate and will not achieve the desired result. While it is understandable that emotions play a role in public health and environment matters, it is vital that all relevant facts are taken into account when taking a decision with such a far-reaching impact.
