I guess the best
lesson I have learned from establishing the SBC is that good
ideas, carried forward in an open and positive manner, will
gather the support and committment to make them real.
We initiated discussions with the California Seed
Association and UC Davis about establishing the SBC in 1997.
Some advised us that given the diversity and competitive
nature of the seed industry, we would never be able to get
their collaborative support and financial assistance. However,
leaders in the industry saw the long-term value of the SBC and
championed its cause among their colleagues. We were able to
raise almost $1.5 million in our building campaign, and this
demonstration of widespread support led to the provision of
operating funds for the SBC.
This partnership between the UC and the seed industry
contributes to the mission of the Agricultural Experiment
Station and to the long-term success of the industry.
