give us a background on the seed trade in your region: main
actors, public and private breeding programs, degree of
dependence on foreign seed suppliers, etc. |

First of all, while mentioning the word
region, I shall concentrate on mainly two countries where the
companies of Debbane Freres are active, Lebanon and Syria.
Historically, this
region has been greatly dependent on the foreign seed
suppliers. Actually, there are very few public breeding
programs but as far as I know they are not yet of significant
importance.
The main actors on the
scene are prominent seed importers who used originally to buy
from the main multinational seed breeders It is worth
mentioning that this region has increased sensibly its
purchases from several seed producers from the United States,
Europe and more and more from the Far East. |
