If we take into consideration the water
shortage during the past years in the Middle East and the advantages
which Syria and Lebanon have in this respect, due mainly to the
yearly snow precipitation in both countries, I foresee that
the coming years will be promising for agriculture in both
countries.
Syria has extensive
acreage of arable land as well as cheap labor. This will enables
Syria to become a leading agricultural country in the Middle
Eastern region. And consequently, Syria will be a major market
for selected seeds. The agreement between Syria and the European
Union, which is now being negotiated, will open
very promising possibilities of export for Syrian agricultural
production.
Lebanon has more acreage
of arable land and will concentrate more on fruit trees due to
various mountain areas allowing the growth of various fruits
varieties all year round. |
