Douglas J. Dorsey - Monsanto Company - USA

August 2002

How does the acquisition of several seed companies help create a company larger than the sum of its parts?
The acquisitions of leading seed companies like Asgrow, DEKALB, Holdens and Corn States in the late 1990s, have provided Monsanto with the opportunity to tailor our business and our strategy to the needs of farmers.

As part of this strategy, we developed an "integrated solutions" approach,
offering farmers a complete package of seeds, biotech traits and chemistry.
With this approach, we have found we can help farmers make their management more efficient and improve the overall productivity of their operations.

We believe that our "integrated solutions" approach is a unique strategy in
this industry. And, that strategy has set us apart in the past few years.

Most of our major competitors have focused the majority of their research
and development investments on chemicals. Monsanto, on the other hand,
focuses the majority of our Research &Development investment on
biotechnology and genomics, which is yielding important new solutions for
the future.

Integrated Solutions for our customers include:
  • Seed and Chem
Roundup Ready systems - corn, soybean, cotton, canola

  • Seed/Chem and Conservation Tillage
Residue-Proven varieties: soybean, corn and grain sorghum

  • Seed/Chem and Enhanced Crop Value
Processor Preferred soybean varieties and corn hybrids
