E.U. Forage and Turf Seed Subsidies
The EU spending on seed subsidies has been increasing constantly since 1994 and has accelerated in the past two years, reaching 109.5 million Euro in 2000. The increase in subsidies is the cause of increased quantities of seed produced by the EU members. This increase in production has created surplus stocks in Europe while affecting Canadian markets. The CSTA has asked the Canadian Government to step in and assist the turf and forage seed industry to address this issue.

CSTA members were requested to provide additional funding to develop and carry out an action plan to influence the reduction of these subsidies. Included in this plan will be statistics such as production figures in North America and production shifts in Europe. This information has been gathered and a case currently be prepared for the Canadian attaché in Brussels.
