Which other
technologies do you see having significant impact on the seed
industry, and what changes are they bringing about?
|
 |
Bioinformatics, where the science of
biology and computer science merge, will allow scientists
companies to better understand, change, and control plant gene
expression. Subsequent genetic enhancements in seed that
change the nature and value of a farmer’s crop will create
even more business opportunities for seed companies.
To take advantage of these
opportunities, we will need to operate in a full-blown
identity preservation system, including traceability and
quality assurance standards not previously required in
production agriculture. Today’s seed companies are in a
position to leverage extensive knowledge of agricultural
identity preservation, passed down and refined by generations
of seed professionals, to help farmers deliver valuable crops
to processors of all kinds, including food, industrial, and
pharmaceutical manufacturers.
