How much impact does the organic movement have in Italy? How strong is the trend towards organic produce? organic food? organic animal feed? organic seed?
Italy has a leadership position in Europe for organic productions (and is second in the world, after the US). The number of organic farmers was about 60,000 at the end of 2001 and the invested area about 1,230,000 Ha, including organic areas and under conversion (http://www.politicheagricole.it/PRODUZIONE/AGRIBIO/Italia2001.htm). This surface represents about 8% of the utilised agricultural area, and crops involved are mainly herbages, cereals, meadows and pastures.

In recent years the growth rate has been very strong. The aim of the central and local agricultural administrations is to reach at least 15% of the total surface in a short while. The EC regulation n. 2092/1991 has provided for positive rules in this sector as regards the production and marketing of the organic products.

From the various administrations there is a strong impulse towards the organic sector, by supporting it with grants of subsidies and incentives in the framework of rural development programmes.

We have recently seen an increasing number of school refectories turning to organic food. The Italian diet style, connected to the environment, to the idea of territory and to a great number of traditional recipes, is inclined to easily identify itself with the organic products.
