The main
difference is that the European Union is aiming at an
exemption system on a ‘kind’ or even ‘species’ level and not
at variety-level.This
means that when it is proven that there is sufficient supply
in a minimum number of varieties for a certain species (e.g.
Lettuce/Iceberg/Outdoor/Summer), then no exemptions will
be given for the use of untreated conventional seed of an
iceberg-variety in that segment which is not available
organically. (So 100% organic seeds in that segment).
This will create a more viable
business environment in the long term and will encourage
seed companies to produce more varieties organically.
Please note: the EU-regulations are
still not finalized, but we hope to have clarity before the
end of June 2003.
