Could you give us
a brief overview of the vegetable seed industry in Brazil?
Focus, strengths, role of the public vs. private
research/breeding domestic seed production and seed exports
vs. imports. |
 |
The Brazilian
vegetable seed market is quite unique among the South American
markets because you will find here very strong private
research (the public sector is more devoted to agronomic
crops), very extensive seed production in both OP’s and F1’s,
a segmented market between professional seeds and the home
garden market with very strong local brand recognition and
distribution.
Remember that Brazil has a population of 175 million
people, half the population of South America. Brazil's
strengths are in its size, the potential for growth in the
local market is fantastic but to really explore this you have
to produce seeds in Brazil to be competitive in the local
market pricing structures. |
