South Africa has become the central
battleground for GM crops in Africa.
The recent pro-biotech Government
Draft National Strategy for Biotechnology should add further
stimulus to adoption of this technology.
The impact on the seed industry is
two-fold : communicating and collaborating with agricultural
industries on commodity separation, identity preservation and
testing; and adding non-GM seed certification to its present
functions.
Outstanding issues are official
consensus on thresholds and accreditation of testing
facilities.
