SEEDS

Farmers all over the world share one concern: how to get the best seed and planting material for next season's crops. Propagation material of high quality is a prerequisite for a crop that is superior in quantity and quality. Plant Research International cooperates with a number of partners in Wageningen Seed Centre (WSC).

WSC is an alliance of five scientific institutions in Wageningen: Plant Research International, the departments of Plant Breeding, Plant Physiology and the Crop and Weed Ecology Group of Wageningen University (WU) and the International Agricultural Centre (IAC).

WSC develops and transfers expertise in all fields related to seed technology and seed related issues.

Wageningen Seed Centre's academic and training staff has expertise in virtually every field, ranging from the basics of plant improvement to issues concerning seed legislation.

  • Biotechnology

  • Seed production and quality management

  • Seed technology

  • Seed quality control, including seed health

  • Seed legislation and seed policy

  • Genetic resources and biodiversity

  • Plant breeding

Wageningen Seed Centre (WSC, http://www.seedcentre.nl ) acts as a collaborating partner or as a consultant in setting up and conducting scientific research programs. These programs may concern fundamental research or they may have an applied character. WSC assists in the development of machinery or devices that are required for specific research tasks. In project management, WSC covers all steps of the project cycle, including identification, formulation, execution and evaluation of project activities.

Examples of such activities are the involvement of WSC in seed projects in Bangladesh, Bolivia, Brazil, China, Egypt, Indonesia, Nicaragua, Sri Lanka, Sudan and Yemen.
