Farm Specialist-Greenhouses

Location: Brooks, Oregon

Assist Farm Manager with day to day greenhouse growing responsibilities for several major breeding programs and support programs.

Responsibilities

  • Assist and communicate with project leaders in all areas of greenhouse growing.
  • Greenhouse management, including: schedule of plantings, drip irrigation, fertilization systems, equipment operation, maintenance/repair/troubleshooting of computerized climate control system, sterilization of greenhouse after each crop, research growing media selection, ordering and maintaining supplies. 
  • Pesticide management to include IPM and pesticide application, maintain pesticide use records and proper posting of applications. 
  • Provide assistance with filling pots and harvest, and supervision of contract labor crew. 
  • Operate forklifts, perform leaf tissue and soil testing on regular basis, and other tasks as assigned by Farm Manager.

Educational Qualifications Desired

  • Degree in Horticulture/Greenhouse Management or equivalent experience
  • Three years of greenhouse growing experience required

Skills and Experience Desired

  • Knowledge of Wadsworth control system helpful, or other control systems
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Computer skills in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Must be able to obtain Forklift Operator’s Permit
  • Pass respirator fit test
  • Work closely with greenhouse users
  • Fluent in English language required, knowledge of Spanish language helpful
  • Must have, or be able to obtain Oregon Private Pesticide Applicators License
  • Perform minor mechanical repairs and troubleshoot

Working Conditions

  • Inside working conditions: heat, humidity
  • Outside working conditions: cold, heat, rain
  • Must wear PPE’s while applying pesticides in a greenhouse setting
  • Minimum of 40 hours per week
  • Seasonally longer hours depending on work load 
  • Able to lift 50 lbs
